What is a wireless network and how can it help me?
Wireless networks use radio frequencies (RF) as an alternative to standard
Ethernet cabling as means of networking multiple PCs and PDAs. Wireless
networking enables notebook PC and PDA users to roam throughout an area
while remaining connected to network resources such as Internet/Intranet,
email, and network file servers.
What do I need to connect to the Walton College of Business Wireless Network?
Three items are required for access:
- An 802.11b compatible network card (NIC)
- The SSID of the wireless network. In this
case, UA-WLAN (this is case
sensitive)
How do I configure my device to work on the Walton College of Business Wireless Network?
Simply input UA-WLAN as the SSID using your wireless network card (NIC)
configuration software.
What is the SSID?
The SSID is a common password unique to each Wireless network. Only those
devices with a common SSID can communicate with one another on the network.
How do I configure the SSID on my computer?
Unfortunately, the SSID can be configured on a computer in a number of methods depending
on the Operating System and the model of the 802.11b compatible network card (NIC). However,
here are the instructions on how to accomplish this on a computer with Windows XP as the
Operating System.
- Click Start -> Control Panel
- Double-click Network Connections
- Right-click your wireless adapter and Select Properties
- Select the Wireless Networks tab. This should display the Wireless Network Connection Properties window at right. Typically, Windows XP
will automatically detect a Wireless Network and display it in the Available Networks area. If not, click Add to add a preferred wireless
network.
- Input the SSID of the wireless network. In this case, UA-WLAN (this is case
sensitive).
- Make sure that "Data Encryption WEP enabled)" is unchecked
- Make sure that "Network Authentication (Shared mode)" is unchecked
- Click OK to close the Wireless Network Properties window.
- Click OK to close the Wireless Network Connection Properties window.
- Close the Network Connections window.
Can I roam from office to office within the Walton College of Business and Reynolds Center for Enterprise Development?
Yes, within these buildings a wireless network card (NIC) will automatically
attain connection with the access point with the strongest signal.
What is the IEEE 802.11b standard?
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is a standards
body, which has defined an 11 Mbps wireless specification, 802.11b, to
ensure multi-vendor interoperability. The technology utilized with this
standard is based on Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) operating in the
2.4 GHz frequency spectrum.
What are some common causes of interference?
Any wireless device operating in the 2.4 GHz spectrum, including 2.4 GHz
cordless phones, microwave ovens as well as fluorescent lights. If you
encounter a great deal of interference, move to a different location and
notify the Tech Center.
