The Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas hosted
the 2005 Girls and Guys and Money Management Enrichment Program (G2AME). This was our
first year to begin this outstanding program. G2AME was funded by a grant
from The Women's Giving Circle at the University of Arkansas and the Office
of Diversity Programs in the Walton College.
G2AME is a one-week residency program designed to introduce Hispanic and
African American girls to the effective and proper use of money, credit and
to increase their awareness about potential careers in the field of finance.
The students will be taught through a carefully tailored curriculum about
money management. During the one-week residency, students will attend
classes in financial literacy, computer information systems, and oral
communications. Student will have an opportunity to participate in the
preparation and presentation of a challenging team project, and develop and
direct a video. Additionally, the participants will have opportunities to
interact with minority professionals from business and government, as well
as visit and observe them in their work environment. At the conclusion of
the program, G2AME participants travel to Kansas City, MO to visit the
Federal Reserve Band, the Negro League Baseball and Jazz Museum.
G2AME was open to high school girls who are African American and Hispanic/
Latina and reside in the state of Arkansas. Students eligible to apply must
be starting their junior or senior year in the fall after participating in
the summer program. Students must have a minimum of 2.75 GPA, complete an
application, submit a letter of recommendation, and show involvement in
school, community and/or church activities. Students applying to G2AME are
not required to have taken a business course in high school. However, a
student must have an interest in majoring in finance or a related business
administration field once they attend college.
Approximately twenty-five students of color are selected to participate
in G2AME. Students selected to participate in G2AME receive a full scholarship
to the program, which covered the cost of tuition, room and board, meals,
books, supplies and transportation. Students are required to live in the
residence hall in order to become familiar with living on a college campus.
Students selected to participate in the program are provided with a round
trip ticket to attend the program.
