The Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of
Arkansas will host a one week session of ACAP(Accounting Career
Awareness Program) to inspire and encourage students to enroll
in the business college at the University of Arkansas.
ACAP is a one-week residency program designed to introduce
students of color to accounting and other areas of business
administration through a carefully tailored curriculum. During
the one-week residency, students will attend classes in
accounting, computer systems, and oral communications. Students
will have an opportunity to participate in preparation and
presentation of a challenging team project. Additionally, the
participant has opportunities to interact with minority
professionals from business and government, as well, and observe
them in their work environment. This program is open to high
school students of color [i.e., Native American, African
American, Asian American, and Hispanic/Latino(a)] who will be
starting their sophomore, junior or senior year in the fall of
2009. Twenty-five students of color will be selected to
participate in ACAP.
Students selected to participate in the program will be
provided with a round trip travel ticket to attend the program.
Students must have a minimum of 3.0 GPA, complete an
application, submit a letter of recommendation, and show
involvement is school, community and/or church activities.
ACT/SAT test results are not required to participate in the
program. Students applying to ACAP are not required to have
taken a business course in high school. However, a student must
have an interest in majoring in accounting or related business
administration field.
University faculty members from the Sam M. Walton College of
Business will teach each of the classes: accounting, multimedia,
ACCESS/Excel and communications.
Students, who attend ACAP will attended classes, develop an
executive presentation; visit a local company's accounting
division and shadow the professionals, interact with college
students from the Walton College, visit the HPER Complex for
organized activities, and hear presentations from various
professionals on campus (admissions, scholarship office, Walton
College Advisement Team).
Students will be supervised by trained college students.
Students are required to live in the residence hall in order to
become familiar with living on a college campus.
